Program 1:
Blended Learning @ FVDES

Welcome to Blended Learning at FVDES! Do you wish to combine the best of both worlds – blending distributed learning at home with onsite classes? Does your child like hands-on learning? Do you live within easy driving distance of our facility? Do you have a parent or other caring adult that can support learning at home? In the 2019-2020 school year, FVDES blended learning programs are expanding and available from kindergarten to grade 9. Our grade 6-7 program is called “Ignite”.

AT SCHOOL Thursdays 9:00am - 11:00am:

IGNITE is a blended learning program that combines face-to-face instruction and distributed learning at home. Students will attend classes one mornings per week. For the remaining days, students will continue their program at home under the guidance of their Home Facilitator. IGNITE students can attend the additional student support times onsite.

  • Applied Design, Skills, and Technology – Will include options from ROBOTICS, Engineering / STEM Challenges, “Maker Space”, Gravity Cars, Spaghetti Bridges, tools, technology
  • Art
  • Parts of Physical and Health Education and Career Education
  • May include project/problem based learning (incorporating multiple subjects – may include language arts, social studies, science, and others), parts of math, or even some French
  • Field trips

  • Students work through curriculum. Up-to-date structured course options and resources are available to engage and support your child’s educational development, or you can work with the teacher to design a more flexible / customized program.
  • *If your child is involved in community programming, ask if it can be part of the learning plan.*

PLEASE NOTE: Eligible families must have a dedicated adult at home to act as home facilitator.

Program 2:
Gr. 6-7 Distributed Learning (DL) at Home

The grade 6/7 distributed learning program is for students who are motivated and work on their program at home under the guidance of their Home Facilitator*. These students have access to the FVDES tutoring/student support centre for additional help. The onsite teachers and DL students/facilitators maintain regular communication and work / evidence of learning is submitted consistently.

PLEASE NOTE: Eligible families must have a dedicated adult at home to act as home facilitator.

Programs 1 and 2:
Parents/Guardians and Home Facilitation

Whether you choose Blended Learning at FVDES or Distributed Learning, it is a requirement that parents/guardians provide a documented commitment for their child’s Student Learning Plan (SLP). As the Home Facilitator, parents/guardians provide guidance, support, and direction for their child in the learning selected on the Student Learning Plan. In order for students to be successful, parents/guardians must play an active role and maintain regular communication with the teacher(s).

The responsibilities also include:

  • Work with the teacher to create a Student Learning Plan that selects either structured FVDES courses or more flexible options to meet BC curricular requirements.
  • Become familiar with the curriculum, content, and resources of the program/course(s) or learning choices outlined on the Student Learning Plan.
  • Provide a suitable permanent workspace for their child.
  • Establish a daily/weekly schedule that includes enough time to develop skills and explore content deeply.
  • Ensure their child completes “school work” on a regular basis.
  • Help put together evidence of learning / submissions of assignments as outlined on the Student Learning Plan with their child before submitting to FVDES.
  • Review returned work and feedback from the teacher(s) with their child.
  • Monitor the online grade-book with their child.

We hope you will join our community of learners!
